MDR-TB Research at Colorado State University

Part of the Mycobacteria Research Laboratories, the MDR-TB research team at Colorado State University is heavily involved in the development and testing of new TB agents for multidrug resistant TB (defined as TB resistant to two first line drugs, isonizaid and rifampin), a rising threat to global health.

Of the 9 million new cases each year, close to half a million are resistant to multiple drugs that usually effectively treat the disease. Drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis may account for 10% of the 8 million new cases of TB that occur annually. Systematic surveys have been undertaken in at least 90 countries globally. The burden of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is growing. Standard-of-care treatment regimens are long, toxic, and frequently unsuccessful.

For the first time in > 30 years, several new drug classes that hold promise for MDR-TB treatment are under development. Colorado State University is heavily involved in the development and testing of new TB agents.
